FCPS Physical Education VISION:
As we move into the twenty-first century, we strive to develop a community of fit, skilled, and knowledgeable students who value a vigorous lifestyle, embody the spirit of pure sportsmanship, practice positive character traits, and desire activity throughout life. We provide exciting, inviting, challenging, and developmentally appropriate opportunities. Using a cross-curricular approach, students acquire and integrate knowledge, develop individual skills through the use of critical thinking, and practical application.
FCPS Physical Education MISSION:
Helping others recognize the importance of lifelong fitness.
Materials:
STudents are expected to change into their pe clothes daily. they must wear athletic shoes in order to participate. Shirts that have the sleeves cut off of them should not be worn in class. The physical education uniform may be purchased from a P.E. teacher. The cost is $12 for shorts and $12 for shirts.
students are encouraged to bring warm clothing (sweatshirts, sweatpants, hats, gloves) for the fall/winter months as we will be having class outside as much as possible. We will follow Fcps cold weather guidelines and students will not be permitted to participate without the appropriate attire.
To protect against theft, all P.E. supplies should be marked with the student’s name so that it is easily identifiable. The P.E. department recommends that students put their name on the back of their shirt in the space provided and on the waist band of their shorts with a permanent marker. We also suggest that students put their name on their shoes, sweat pants, sweat shirts, etc.
All students will be issued a P.E. lock and locker during the first week of school. For security reasons, students may not bring in their own lock. The lock that your child is issued is free unless they lose it at which point a $5.00 fee would be charged to replace the lost one and get a new one.
NO SPRAY PERFUMES, DEODORANTS, AEROSOL CANS, OR GLASS CONTAINERS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE GYM OR LOCKER ROOMS AT ANY TIME! This is for safety reasons as there are a number of students with allergy issues. The P.E. uniform should remain in school throughout the week so that the students will always be properly prepared. The uniform should be laundered over the weekend and returned on Monday. We appreciate your help with this.
Grading Procedures:
Physical Education grades are based on assessment in all three domains of learning: cognitive (knowledge), affective (social/psychological), and kinesthetic (movement). Physical education will also be implementing standard based grading this year. students will no longer be receiving a daily grade in pe. 100% of your child's grade will be based on their ability to meet the exit outcomes that correlate with each of the five naspe standards. the following is the rubric that will be used to assess the outcomes:
Fitness testing will be administered to students at least twice a year. Students wills be graded based on their ability to record scores, identify the fitness component which needs improvement to reach a healthy level, and to develop a plan to improve their individual fitness.
Absences:
It is the student’s responsibility to request any missed assignments or work from the teacher when absent. A student has three days from the date of return to school to complete any missed work, including fitness testing.
Excuses:
A parent note is required if the student is going to miss 1-3 school days. If a student is going to miss 3 or more days of P.E. class, please complete an Activity Restriction Form and turn it into P.E. teacher. This form needs to be filled out by a parent/guardian as well as a health care provider. An Activity Restriction Form can be obtained from a P.E. teacher or one can be printed off of our school website http://wkms.sites.fcps.org/home. Go to the FCPS drop down menu and click on Forms, then scroll down and click on the activity restriction form.
Health:
All students will have health for an entire term at some point this year. The Family Life Preview will be held on September 21st from 5pm to 7pm for all three grade levels (6th, 7th, and 8th). This is the only Family Life Preview that will be held for the 2016-2017 school year. If you are not able to attend on this day you will need to contact your child’s physical education teacher to setup a day and time to preview the material during the school day.
BYOD:
Windsor Knolls Middle School is continuing the Bring Your Own Device program (BYOD). This policy allows students to use registered devices in an educational setting at the discretion of the teacher. Please keep in mind that BYOD is a privilege, and like all privileges, may be taken away if abused. Abuse may include, but is not limited to, accessing personal data networks, and accessing internet resources not approved by the teacher.
Device use is prohibited in the locker room (P.E.). Students should put their devices in their Hall Lockers prior to coming to P.E. unless otherwise notified by their P.E. Teacher. if a student violates this rule, they will recieve an immediate referral.
