What is PBIS and how does it work at Windsor Knolls?
PBIS is a school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports system that teaches students pro-social skills and supports behaviors consistent with a positive and safe learning environment. In order for PBIS to be successful, several pieces must come together to support the concepts and goals of PBIS.
We believe the success of PBIS relies on our whole school community's support along with programs in place at the school level. WKMS staff, students, parents and the business community play important roles to strengthen the impact PBIS can have on our students.
Part of our PBIS program this year includes the newly-implemented OLWEUS anti-bullying program. This research-based school wide “systems-change” program has been used successfully in schools with positive results. It is not a curriculum that students participate in for only a few weeks. Rather, it is a coordinated effort by all the adults in the school to supervise and intervene when any bullying happens.
A new discipline pyramid was implemented this year to support PBIS. The pyramid is designed to provide positive intervention for minor infractions before they become more problematic. This system will result in less referrals and more quality learning time for students.
In order to ensure the success of PBIS, it is imperative that we reward students, teachers and staff for displaying positive behaviors that reflect a dedication to learning and citizenship. Windsor Knolls Middle School has a very limited budget so we will be asking for monetary and/or product donations that can be used as rewards for our students.
By working together as a school community, we are sure our continued implementation of PBIS will be a huge success and benefit the entire school community as students learn that positive behaviors result in better learning, better citizenship qualities and a more cohesive community.
